Julio Bracho Gavilán (1909-1978)
Film and theater director, scriptwriter, producer and actor. Together with Isabel Corona, he founded the Teatro Orientación and in 1936 he founded the Teatro de la Universidad. His first job in film was as codirector of the film Redes, next to Fred Zinnemann, written by Paul Strand, a photographer from the United States who was a friend of Manuel Álvarez Bravo. In 1941 he debuted as a director with the film ¡Ay, qué tiempos, señor don Simón!. In 1945 he worked with Álvarez Bravo on the film Cantaclaro, which earned three Ariel awards. Among his outstanding films are El monje blanco (1945), Canasta de cuentos mexicanos (1955), México lindo y querido (1958), La sombra del caudillo (1960), Guadalajara en verano (1964), Espejismos de la ciudad (1975) and Los amantes fríos (1977).
