Throughout the many negatives that the Archivo´s team has catalogued, we found a remarkable number of portraits dating from the 1930s up tothe 1950s. We had fun trying to guess who the people might be, and what they might have done for a living. We talked about them incessantly, inventing life-stories for them and giving them nicknames…
Months passed, and so did the years. Those individuals remained captive within their boxes, and yet they had escaped into time and space because we never stopped thinking about them and wondering about their possible identities.
We decided to take up their cause, becoming their accomplices in trying to help them emerge from anonymity. And what better to do this than by enlisting the help of many other people!
Which is how we hit on the idea of the exhibition and a photobook.
The show was held from February to June 2018 at the Museo Archivo de la Fotografía and the photobook was published in August.
Wanted… does not have an artistic purpose. It is a project on archive materials, that is, photographs that were not published by the artist himself.
Our purposes here are somehow historical and anthropological, and we are grateful for the reader´s contributions.
