Juan O’Gorman(1905-1982)
Architect, painter and sculptor. He studied architecture at the Academia de San Carlos and at the Architecture Department of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. At 27 years of age he designed and built his first house under the concept of functional architecture, later adopting organic architecture. Among his most emblematic works are his house in San Ángel, Diego Rivera’s and Frida Kahlo’s home-studio and the murals on the Central Library at UNAM’s Ciudad Universitaria. He was a professor at the Instituto Politécnico Nacional, where he created a field of studies: engineering architecture. Juan O’Gorman entered the Academia de las Artes in 1971 and was awarded the Premio Nacional de Bellas Artes in 1972.
