Visual artist. He studied at the Academia de San Carlos. In 1930 he founded the Escuela de Pintura y Escultura in Taxco, Guerrero. He was a member of the Liga de Escritores y Artistas Revolucionarios (LEAR), where he worked intensely illustrating magazines and posters. From 1937 to 1947 he worked with Leopoldo Méndez, Pablo O’Higgins and Luis Arenal to found the Taller de Gráfica Popular. In 1949 he founded the Taller de Artes Plásticas in Uruapan, Michoacán, and in 1950 he was named director of the Escuela Popular de Bellas Artes de Morelia, where he also founded the Escuela de Pintura y Artesanía. In 1979 he created the Premio de Artes Plásticas Alfredo Zalce.
